It gained national attention in July 2002 when nine coal miners were trapped underground for over 77 hours after a mining accident. The incident occurred when the miners accidentally broke into an adjacent, flooded mine, causing water to rapidly fill their mine shaft. A dramatic rescue operation was launched, involving drilling a rescue shaft and pumping out water to reach the trapped miners. Miraculously, all nine miners were successfully rescued, making it one of the most remarkable rescue operations in U.S. mining history. Today, Quecreek is known for its mining heritage and the resilience of its community.
