Moundville, Alabama is a small town located in Hale County, about 14 miles south of Tuscaloosa. It is best known for the Moundville Archaeological Park, which preserves the remains of a prehistoric Native American settlement. The park features over 20 earthen mounds, some of which were used for ceremonial purposes and others as residential areas. Moundville was once a thriving Mississippian culture center, with a population estimated to be around 1,000 people at its peak. Today, visitors can explore the park, learn about the history and culture of the Native Americans who lived there, and view artifacts in the on-site museum.
